GLOSSARY

Somatotopic

Related to particular areas of the body; a correspondence between the form of the body and its representation on an organ such as the brain. The motor and sensory cortices of the brain are arranged somatotopically, specific regions of the cortex being responsible for different areas of the body.

—————

Stellate Cell

Any star-shaped cell, as a Kupffer cell or astrocyte, having many filaments extending in all directions.

—————

Stria of Gennari

A band of myelinated axons projecting into layer 4C of the primary visual cortex from the lateral geniculate nucleus. This formation is visible to the naked eye, and is coterminous with area V1.

—————

Subplate Neurons

Among the first generated neurons in the mammalian cerebral cortex

—————

Sulcus

A groove or fissure, especially a fissure between two convolutions of the brain.

—————

Tactile

Perceptible to the sense of touch; tangible.

—————

Telencephalon

Refers to the cerebral hemispheres and other, smaller structures within the brain, although the telencephalon is one of the larger divisions (in terms of number). It is the anterior-most embryological division of the brain that develops from the prosencephalon.

—————

Thalamus

A pair and symmetric part of the brain. It constitutes the main part of the diencephalon.

—————

Upper Motor Neurons

Motor neurons that originate in motor region of the cerebral cortex or the brain stem and carry motor information down to the final common pathway, that is, any motor neurons that are not directly responsible for stimulating the target muscle.

—————

White Matter

Nerve tissue, especially of the brain and spinal cord, which primarily contains myelinated fibres and is nearly white in colour.
