Name & Definition
► The cerebral cortex plays a major role in consciousness, memory, thought, language, perceptual awareness and attention.
► In anatomical terms the word cortex means the most superficial layer of an organ. Therefore the Cerebral Cortex is the outermost layer (1.5mm to 5.0mm thick) of the vertebrate cerebrum, the anterior portion of the brain (labelled in the image to the left).
► The cerebral cortex is often referred to as grey matter due to its colour in preserved brains. This differs from the white matter of the rest of the brain as the unmyelinated nerves in the cerebral cortex lack the insulation (the myelination) that makes white matter appear white.
